According to rankings from web security firm Cloudflare, Google is no longer the most popular domain in the world, after been overtaken by TikTok.
The most popular domains list is part of Cloudflare’s Year in Review report, and it shows which domains saw the biggest traffic growth from one year to the next.
Google.com, which includes Maps, Translate, and News, among other services, was ranked first in Cloudflare’s rankings last year.
TikTok was at the seventh position at the moment.
TikTok.com is now on track to exceed Google, Facebook, Amazon, and other world-leading domains by the end of 2021.
The following is the full list of the top 10 most popular domains as of late 2021:
According to Cloudflare, TikTok’s quest to become the most popular domain will continue throughout the year 2022:
“TikTok took up the #1 spot for a day on February 17, 2021. TikTok gained a few more days in March and May, but it wasn’t until August 10, 2021, that TikTok took the lead on the majority of days. There were several days when Google was number one, but TikTok dominated October and November, particularly on Thanksgiving (November 25) and Black Friday (November 26).”
Lists of the most popular social media domains, most popular e-commerce platforms, and most popular video streaming sites are also featured in Cloudflare’s research.
To no one’s surprise, Amazon was the most popular e-commerce site at the end of the year, followed by Taobao, Ebay, and Walmart.
Giants like Netflix, YouTube, and HBOMax topped the list of most popular video streaming services. Twitch, interestingly, did not make the top 10.
Putting These Rankings In Their Proper Context
Is this to say that TikTok has surpassed Instagram as the most popular social media platform?
No, there’s still a long way to go before it reaches those lofty heights.
💡 This means that, according to Cloudflare, TikTok.com received more traffic than any other domain.
That does not imply that TikTok has a larger user base than Google or other social media platforms.
TikTok has eclipsed Snapchat and Twitter in global user counts, according to Insider Intelligence (previously eMarketer), but is still far behind Facebook and Instagram.
To put it simply, TikTok is the world’s third largest social media site.
In 2020, the number of global TikTok users increased by 59.8%, and in 2021, it increased by another 40.8 percent.
TikTok’s global user base is expected to rise by 15.1 percent by 2022, according to Insider Intelligence.
If that prediction holds true, TikTok will account for 20% of all social media users by the end of next year.
If TikTok isn’t already a part of your social media marketing strategy for 2022, these figures should convince you that it should be.
